Course:  CE Medical Terminology (DSC HLOC 1000 – 2 credits)

Course Description:

Medical Terminology is a one semester course that helps students understand the Greek and Latin-based language of medicine and healthcare.  Emphasis is placed upon word roots, suffixes, prefixes, abbreviations, symbols, anatomical terms, and terms associated with movements of the human body.  This course also stresses proper pronunciation, spelling, and usage of medical terminology.  This class is helpful to anyone considering going into the healthcare field.

Textbook:           Medical Terminology Simplified, A Programmed Learning Approach by Body Systems, 3rd Edition by Barbara A. Gylys and Regina M. Masters, 2005

 

Course Fees:       There is a $35 registration to Dixie State University (unless you have already registered with them for another class)  There is also a $10 fee to receive the 2 credits for all enrolled students.

 

Course Objectives:

  1. Recognize word construction and dissection.
  2. Apply word building and definitions.
  3. Give the meanings of a set of prefixes.
  4. Give the meanings of a set of word roots.
  5. Give the meanings of a set of suffixes.
  6. Interpret and extract information from realistic medical documents.
  7. Use medical reference books to find information about medical terms.
  8. Apply medical terminology to a real life setting.
  9. Interpret and apply identified medical abbreviations.
  10. Interpret identified medical symbols.
  11. Recognize and apply identified anatomical terms.
  12. Define terms associated with the planes of the body.
  13. Describe anatomical position as a reference point for describing areas of the body.
  14. Describe and apply identified terms associated with movement.
  15. Define directional terms.

 

 

 

 

Course Outline:

The material will be organized and presented first by basic word building, then by prefixes, suffixes and finally by body system.  Successful completion of this course will result in the student being proficient in the language used in the healthcare field (as demonstrated by the scoring of 80% or better on the State CTE Exam for Medical Terminology).

Grading Policy:  Students grades will be based on tests, assignments, projects, presentations, quizzes and daily warm-up activities.  I will try to balance the amount of points awarded by tests and other types of assignments.  The Grading scale is as follows:

 

93-100%- A        

90-92%- A-

87-89%- B+

83-86%- B

 80-82%- B-

 77-79%- C+

 73-76%- C

 70-72%- C-

 67-69%- D

63-66%- D

60-62%- D-

59% or lower- F

 

Academic Integrity:  Cheating, copying or other forms of dishonesty are wrong and against school policy.  If you are caught cheating on an assignment or test your paper will be immediately discarded and no points will be awarded for that assignment for all parties involved.  Additional consequences may also be necessary.
