Course Description

    • In this course, students will be creating and using social media platforms to identify, discuss, synthesize, and create central themes.

Learning Outcomes

      • Students will create 6 different social media accounts and use them in ELA class.
      • Students will create curated collections on Pinterest.
      • Students will use social media accounts to identify, discuss, synthesize, and create central themes.
      • Students will work collaboratively to discuss central themes and key details.
      • Students will reflect on their learning through the use of blogs.

Performance and Participation Expectations 

      • Submit assignments on or before the due date.
      • Contribute in content-based discussions through social media accounts.
      • Will join the necessary social media accounts.
      • Will join a PLN (personal learning network) within the course.

Social Media Guidelines

      • Students will separate personal and educational accounts for social media and work-based accounts.
      • Students will use the THINK (True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, Kind) acronym before they post something on social media. 
      • Students will use school-based social media accounts for educational purposes.
      • Use appropriate social netiquette - remember all CAPS can show that you are yelling.
      • Students will identify themselves in a limited manner - initials or first name only are acceptable.
      • Students will credit author's work by citing it when it needs to be given.  
      • Be respectful and mindful of others.
      • Set the appropriate and necessary privacy settings for your social media accounts.
      • Contact your teacher if you are a victim of cyberbullying.

Potential Use

Facebook

Use your google email account and set up a Facebook account.  Please join our class Facebook page.

The purpose of Facebook will be to post course announcements, a form of communication between peers as well as the teacher.

To be connected to your class.  A place to share work, a place to collaborate with peers and a place to chat with classmates.  

Blogging

Choose wordpress or blogger and create a blog for our course.  

To write their own ideas, content, and reflections.

To write personal learning reflections on their assignments.

YouTube

Use your google email account and set up a YouTube account.  

Students will be able to create playlists as well as curate content as well as subscribe to specific videos or authors.  

A place to create playlists and share created videos.

Google+

With your google email account, you can set up a google+ account.  

This will be a platform for students to share work and collaborate with peers.

A place where all google accounts are linked.  Students will share blog entries with others.

Twitter

Please set up your account here. You will need your email address.

To engage in a broader community while using our class hashtag.

To follow the course hashtag and to communicate with others.  

Pinterest

Please set up your account here.  You will need your email address.

This will be used to curate content.

A place where students and their PLN will curate their work.

Google Docs

With your google email account, you have access to google docs.  You can create any document type you want and then share your doc.

A great way to collaborate with peers while working on projects together.

Feedly

Please set up your feedly account here.  

 

To curate content as well as provide updates on user’s important sites and blogs.

Access to multiple blogs including the members of their PLN. This allows them to find blogs easier and more efficiently.

 

Student Interaction

  • Students will form small study groups or PLNs of 3 people for project creation using Facebook, and use Google Docs for collaboration and feedback within those groups. Facebook and Twitter will be used to report group progress.  
  • Students will create blogs through blogger that will be used for self reflection on assignments, as well as a space for them to create their own personal notes.  These blogs will then be given out through the RSS reader Feedly, so students can become their peer’s audience.  

Monitoring Student Interaction

    • Hashtags - #RL2centraltheme
      • Teacher will use the hashtag #RL2centraltheme for all posts relating to this course.
    • RSS feeds -  Feedly
      • Teacher will create a Feedly account to access all student blogs and each new post.
    • Process of disseminating announcements and aggregated student contributions on a regular basis.
      • All content and directions will be given explicitly through this Canvas site.
      • Teacher will create a class Facebook page to disseminate announcements and important information.
      • Teacher will use and advise students to use the hashtag #RL2centraltheme while discussing content from the learning activities on Twitter.
      • Students will be asked to create a Google+ group that has the members of their personal learning network so they can easily find material they need to collaborate on.
      • Google Docs used to collaborate will be shared with the teacher for any input or assistance.
      • Teacher will have students tweet links to blogs, curation (boards on Pinterest), and Google+ postings.
