Course Description:       A broad approach to musical literature and its place in the cultural development of Western civilization. This class is designed for a person who has no background in music and desires three (3) transferable units in Humanities. Transfer States: Transferable to UC/CSU, see counselor for limitations.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Analyze pieces of music from the common-practice periods for standard elements of Western repertoire.
  • Analyze and critique performances according to stylistic elements

Course Objectives:

  • Define and explain the elements of music which include terminology, style, genres, forms, instruments, and performers.
  • Recognize and identify the common instrument and voice types and their techniques of performance
  • Recognize and distinguish various styles of music from the common-practice periods
  • Articulate the relationships between music and other art forms as well as the arts role in society
  • Describe the various forms of instrumental music, including symphonic and program music
  • Recognize the major composers of Western classical music and representative works.
  • Identify the various traits of different composers
  • Identify and recognize different Western musical instruments separately and as an ensemble
  • Identify different musical forms (Sonata-Allegro, Theme & Variation, etc.)

Required Text/Materials:

  • Forney, K. (2013). The Enjoyment of Music, Essential Listening Edition, 2nd edition

Methods of Instruction:

  • Lecture, presentations, and performances/demonstrations
  • Homework, reading assignments, written assignments, and class work and class participation
  • Online assignment

Attendance:

  • Online course: Students who do not complete an assignment within two (2) week may be dropped from the class for “non attendance”
  • At the discretion of the instructor, he/she may lower a grade or drop a student from class for too many absences (3 or more absences). Students who are absent in excess of twenty percent (20%) of the total class hours or for two consecutive weeks may be dropped from class. At the discretion of the instructor, students not attending the first class session may be dropped. Such students may be reinstated only at the discretion of the instructor for extenuating circumstances. Extenuating circumstances shall be defined as reasons for absence beyond the control of the student. Typical examples of such circumstances would be verifiable extended illness, hospitalization, court appearances or death in the immediate Extenuating circumstances do occur and will be fairly dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Examples of circumstances that will not be accepted are trips to the airport, fights with significant others, preparing or studying for other classes, trouble finding parking, over sleeping, etc. Excused absences are entirely subject to instructor approval.   • Exams: 55%
    • Exams 40%, Final Exam 15%
  • Homework 45%
    • Chapter Homework Quizzes 20%, Homework Listening Quizzes 10%, and Writing Assignments 10%
    • Discussion Forum 5%
      • No late assignments will be accepted.
  • There will be no extra-credit in this course (please do your assignments and extra-credit won’t be needed)

A = 91% - 100%

B = 81% - 90%

C = 71% - 80%, Credit/No Credit

D = 61% - 70%

F = 0% - 60%
