Advising International Students
Big Ideas:
- Explore the U.S. education system to head off misunderstandings in expectations
- Discover solutions to common cultural disparities
- Learn different communication tactics that transcend the language barrier
- Understand and apply the concept of Appreciative Advising
Expectations:
- Students will successfully address large, common issues faced by international students by research and presentation
- Students utilize communication tactics that transcend the language and cultural barrier by studying the effects that language has on communication and creating a plan that allows for universal understanding when advising one-on-one
- Students will apply appreciative advising into their professional practice by creating a department-wide action plan integrating highlighting the key points of appreciative advising
This intensive course provides the opportunity for students to complete two major projects and two discussions.
