Course Title: DH 102: Extraoral and Intraoral Examination (patient assessment).
Introduction: Hello Students! My name is Melissa Jackson. I will be your instructor for the next four weeks. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the course or assignments at jacksonmelissa@yahoo.com. I will make sure to respond to all emails in a timely manner, within 24 hours, considering that this is a short course and there are many assignments due each week.
Description: This is the online didactic portion that supports the hands-on clinical laboratory for the on-campus course. This online class will explore the extraoral and intraoral anatomy and landmarks that students will need to know and examine both visually and manually during the patient assessment.
Audience and Prerequisites: This class is for OIT, Sophomore Dental Hygiene Students who have completed DH 101 with a passing grade. You must use a computer, laptop, or other means of accessing the internet to access this course and to submit assignments. Make sure that the device that you choose to use can properly upload the supplemental materials required for each assignment. You must have the minimal technical skills to electronically complete your assignments and access the required materials to complete this course.
How to get started: Please review this syllabus, the required reading, and the supplemental materials that are necessary to complete this course. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Canvas platform. In the left side bar menu, you will find the tab for your assignments, the discussion board (where you will post your assignments), and your grades. Please review your assignments thoroughly regarding the rubric and assignment due dates.

- Week 1: Extraoral head and neck anatomy and landmarks
- Week 2: Intraoral anatomy and landmarks
- Week 3: Abnormalities of the head and neck region
- Week 4: Final Project
Learning objectives:
- Week 1: Students will be able to identify specific landmarks of the head and neck.
- Week 2: Students will be able to identify specific landmarks of the oral cavity and oropharynx.
- Week 3: Students will be able to identify abnormalities of the head and neck region
- Week 4: Students will apply the knowledge they have learned to perform an extraoral/intraoral examination on a mock patient.
Forms of Instruction:
- Required Textbook: Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist (11th Edition) by Esther M. Wilkins, LWW: 2012.
- Check each assignment for links to required supplemental materials.
Grades: All assignments are due on time for full credit. Please check each assignment for its point value and grading rubric. "You can see your grades and determine your percentage in this course at all times. To calculate your actual percent, simply divide your current total score out of the points possible to date" (Concordia University 2015). Final letter grades are as follows:
A 90%-100%
B 80% - 89%
C 70% - 79%
D 60% - 69%
F 0% - 59%
