Course Syllabus
Instructor: Coby Thornton. Mr. Thornton has served Hawaii as an elementary school teacher for several years. He has experience in teaching students in preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, and fourth grade. He currently teaches fourth grade full time as he pursues a masters in Educational Technology at the University of Hawaii.
Purpose: The purpose of this MOOC is to teach fourth graders about the Hawaiian Monarchs that ruled after King Kamehameha I. This MOOC also serves as a source of information for teachers to use in their social studies curriculum.
Hawaii State Content Standards Covered: This MOOC is designed to cover the following standards in Hawaii:
SS.4.1.1- Describe both change and continuity of aspects of Hawaiian culture.
SS.4.3.7- Describe the interactions among different cultural and ethnic groups in early Hawaii.
SS.4.3.8- Explain the evolution of Hawaii’s state government.
SS.4.3.10- Describe how significant people, including those of legend affected pre-contact Hawaii.
SS.4.6.3- Describe the changes in Hawaiian culture through contact with Westerners.
SS.4.7.3- Analyze the consequences of human modification of the physical environment in Hawaii using geographic representations.
Schedule:
Week 1-2: Complete the reading, assignment, discussion, and quiz on Kamehameha II
Week 3-4: Complete the reading, assignment, discussion, and quiz on Kamehameha III
Week 5-6: Complete the reading, assignment, discussion, and quiz on Kamehameha IV
Week 7-8: Complete the reading, assignment, discussion, and quiz on Kamehameha V
Week 9-10: Complete the reading, assignment, discussion, and quiz on William Lunalilo
Week 11-12: Complete the reading, assignment, discussion, and quiz on David Kalakaua
Week 13-14: Complete the reading, assignment, discussion, and quiz on Lydia Liliuokalani
Note: The schedule of the MOOC is very relaxed and has been organized in chronological order, from beginning to end. If you would like to skip to a particular monarch, you are free to do so. Keep in mind, that the activities for each monarch should take about one week in total. Make sure to manage your time wisely and do not procrastinate.
