Senior IB Research is a support class for all other courses and CAS requirements for the IB Diploma.

  • Criteria for grading is that students are academically and intellectually engaged. Research grade is based on effort, follow through, and time management during the class
  • Requirements are to consistently engage in: homework, IA research and completion, and completion of assigned work from IB teachers to be done in the Research block
  • Students can work independently or collaboratively (when appropriate) on: academic assignments, CAS planning and documentation, special events such as Culture Night, or CAS groups such as “Colors for CASA”
  • IB academic teachers can assign work specifically for the Research block graded by the assigning teacher

Research class will include:

  • Support and instruction in statistics methods for completion of Biology, Math, and Chemistry IAs
  • Advising for all CAS requirements and CAS project and time for CAS planning and documentation
  • Small group instruction/tutoring for statistical methods needed for IA external assessments
  • Computer lab time available for IA research and mastery of Stat Crunch software
  • Statistics for calculator and software instruction and tutorials will be available
  • Extra credit assignments and readings posted on CANVAS to work on if caught-up in classes

There are three types of work day routines students will follow:

  1. A study-work session with a library-like atmosphere. Work is done independently. No phones or listening to music.  Devices such as tablets, laptops are allowed on a case-by-case basis. Classroom computers will be available.
  2. Alternating periods of collaborative and independent work, such as 45/45 or 30/30/30 minutes.
  3. Students divided between small group instruction on one side of room, and collaborative groups on the other.

Required Materials:

  • Students should bring any materials needed to complete your work
  • Plan on enough homework, readings, CAS planning tasks, or course assignments to remain engaged for the entire block
  • Appropriate extra-curricular (pleasure reading) is acceptable if students are current in all other responsibilities

WORKING IN ANOTHER CLASSROOM: If you need to see another teacher, get a note from the teacher so you can be excused during Research. To avoid disrupting other classes, I will not send students without a note from the teacher.

MEDIA CENTER: We will occasionally have scheduled time in the media center. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to go to the media center unless you need to do research for an assignment. You MUST have a note from your teacher to be allowed to go.

GUIDANCE: you will not be allowed to leave class to see an administrator, guidance counselor, Mr. Buettner, or other front office personnel without a pass or a note.
