Course Syllabus

Course Description:

This course will prepare you to be successful in a 5th grade reading class in the state of Colorado.  Students will participate in a variety of activities that will strength important 5th grade reading skills.  The activities will focus on teaching students to think critically and utilize self-reflection to ensure that skills are mastered.  The goal of this course is to strengthen students’ reading skills so that they are prepared to enter middle school with the prerequisites needed to be successful.  

 

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, you will be able to…

-identify literary elements (character, setting, problem, plot, solution, theme, etc.) in a text.

-identify the main idea and supporting details in a text.

-summarize a fiction and nonfiction text.

-compare and contrast different texts and details with in a text.

-identify cause and effect in a text.

-draw conclusions and make inferences while reading a text.

-predict what will most likely happen in a story by using evidence from the text.

-use text features (graphs, headings, subheadings, charts, etc.) to aid reading comprehension.

 

Required Texts:

-All the texts you need are attached as files to the assignments or found in the modules for each week..  You do not need to purchase any additional books.

 

Course Grading:

90-100%= A

80-89%= B

70-79%= C

60-69%= D

59% and below= F

 

 Assignments: 

All assignments are due on the Sunday at the end of the week.  I will accept assignments up to three days late, but you will lose 10% of your points each day it is late.

 

Discussions:

There are many discussions throughout this course because they are a very important part of learning online.  Make sure that you complete all of the discussions on time.  This will help you to get the most out of this course.  You will also always have to respond to at least two of your peers.  Your peer responses should include a comment about their post and then a question.  You can include more, but that is the minimum.  Your initial post is always due on the Thursday of the week the discussion is due and your peer responses will always be due on the Sunday of the week the discussion is due.
