Course Goals

The goal of the orientation course is to help students become familiar with the online technology tools to help them become successful learners.

Course objectives

  • To demonstrate the importance of technology tools that support learning
  • To identify the traits of a successful distant learner
  • To identify additional resources that will further successful learning 

Required reading for the orientation course

  • Parker (2012) Hastings High School Student Handbook.

Chapter 1: Internet Use on Campus

Chapter 2: Acceptable Use Policy

  • Handouts given to you in the face to face portion will supplement your learning in the online portion.
  • See  Module 3

Recommended Reading

  • White, K. W., & Baker, J. D. (2003). The student guide to successful online learning: a handbook of tips, strategies, and techniques. Boston: Pearson/Allyn and Bacon.

 

Course Topics and Organization

The class has been divided into groups of 3. You were introduced to your group in the face to face portion of the class. You will work with the same members in the online portion.

Week 1: introducing yourself

Assignment 1: Set up the Shared notebook. In your shared note book each person needs to write a one page Vita about themselves. 

Discussion: To understand goal setting, conduct an internet search. Write down 3 long term goals you have. These may be goals you want to achieve in your life time.  Then write down your goals for this course. What are your expectations of yourself for this course? Proceed to this week’s discussion about goal setting.

 

Week 2:  Effective learning

Assignment 1: Take the learning styles and multiple intelligence tests. Search the internet to find strategies that help your particular learning style and intelligence. In your shared notebook reflect on the information from the searches about ways you learn.

Discussion: what has been your experience of learning? Has it catered to your learning style/intelligence? Do you feel you had been at a disadvantage.

Assignment 3: As a group, produce a mind map using Bookvar™ that reflects the different learning styles and intelligences and strategies that help you learn.  Submit this via the drop box by Sunday 11.59pm

 

Week 3 - 

Assignment 1:  In your shared notebook, each person should write about their favorite book. In a paragraph provide a short synopsis of the book and then justify why it should be considered as good literature. What lesson does it teach about human nature? If you were to teach others about the themes in this book, how would you teach them?

Discussion: In this week’s discussion share your thoughts about what can be considered good literature. What is the criterion?

Assignment 2:  set up your group wiki. Learn how the tools with in the wiki work. Set up your group wiki. Learn how the tools with in the wiki work. Post your link in the projects’ discussion board

 

Week 4 – Tying it altogether

Discussion: For this week’s discussion reflect on the goals that you set at the beginning of this course. Have you achieved them? Do you feel the need to adjust them? What steps do you need to take to make your goals achievable?

Assignment1: Group project using WikiSpaces® . You will create a group wiki which reflects on the technology tools introduced in this orientations and how it has supported your preferred style of learning. Remember to upload your Bookvar™ mind map. Include a section about your favorite book. Show the themes of your book through your tool or resource that supports your learning style. 

Grading Policy

Grading 75% of your grade if from the online portion while the other 25% the is from the face to face portion of the course

Discussion

All initial posts in the discussion board are due by Wednesday 11.59pm. For a minimum grade students must make two additional posts by Sunday, of the same week, by 11.59pm. (For length and other information, look at the rubric in module 3).

Assignments

All assignments are due in on Sunday, by 11.59pm via the drop box.

 Late Policy

For every day it is late you will lose one letter grade. Additionally, assignments will not be accepted three days after the deadline.

You may email, call me or see me about issues regarding grading or of a personal nature. All emails will be answered within 24 hours. Any questions pertaining to assignments must be posted in the Q & A section of the discussion board.
