Objective:  Students will be introduced to the literary aspects of nonfiction, poetry, drama, short stories, and novels.

Required Readings:  Various short stories, plays, poems, and scripture out of The Language of Literature and The Crucible.

Activities:

  • Journals:  Write your name, the class/period, the date, and the prompt at the top of the page.  Write one full page about the prompt.  In your journal talk about your feelings, reactions, and/or something that relates to the topic.  A full page is full credit (10 pts each).  This is a place for students to free write.  It is not graded on spelling or grammar.
  • Daily Quizzes:  We will have almost daily quizzes for each story we read.  Students who have notes in their binder may use them on the quiz.  If you are absent on a quiz day, you do not need to make up the quiz.  You may request a blank copy of the quiz to get the answers to and study for the test.
  • Notebooks:  All students need a three-ring binder, page dividers, and loose-leaf notebook paper.  Students are encouraged to bring their binders to class with them every day.  Materials in their binders may be used on quizzes.  Binders may be checked at times for extra credit.
  • Assignments:  All assignments are due at the beginning of class unless told otherwise.  Getting this syllabus signed and put in a binder with dividers is the first extra credit assignment for new students.  Returning students may re-use their binder and extra credit from first semester.  Only major assignments (essays, presentations, etc) will be accepted late.  The teacher may give back any assignment that is not completed to the teacher’s satisfaction to be re-done.  Re-do work may be considered late. The highest grade late work may receive is a C-.
  • Tests:  If a student is absent on test day, he or she must make up the test with me.  It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a time to take the test.  If a student is absent the day before the test and returns on test day, he or she must take it the regularly scheduled test day.   Students may re-take tests that they fail if they request to do so.  Students may be given alternate versions for the re-takes.   The highest grade they may earn on a re-take is 70 (C-).

Make Up and Late Work:

  • If absent, the student is responsible for getting the work from the teacher and completing the work.  The agenda for each day is listed on the back board so that a student can easily see if he or she missed any worksheets, tests, etc.  The student will have two days (as stated in that handbook) to hand in the make up work without penalty.  (This is the rule for assignments given the day the student is absent, not things that were assigned in advance, such as an essay that the student knew about for a week)  Those assigned in advance are due the day a student returns to class.
  • Only major assignments will be accepted late.  The highest grade late work may receive is a C-.
