Course Description:
This one semester class is designed for students who are going into the workplace after graduation and who need business writing practice. It will include letter and report writing, interviews, presentations, as well as other forms of practical communication. Students will also write résumés, cover letters, directions, and surveys.
Classroom Rules:
1) Students will have no food or drink in the classroom.
2) Students will be prepared for and on time to class everyday.
3) Students will keep a positive attitude and work to the best of their abilities on every task.
4) Students will show respect to me and each other.
Points System:
Workplace Writing grades will be based on the percentage of points earned. Points will be earned for assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, and a few extra credit activities.
Assignments: Students should have a three-ring binder for this class to keep work in and some loose leaf paper for taking notes. They should be brought to class every day to be used for activities and quizzes. We will also have journal entries, worksheets, and so forth. Any major assignment that is not done satisfactorily may be given back to be re-done by the student. Work that is re-done may be considered late. Late work will not be accepted unless it is a major assignment (essays, presentations, etc.)! The highest grade late work may receive is a C-. Students have two days to hand in assignments after an absence as described in the student handbook without being counted late. This does not apply to things that were assigned in advance. They will be due the first day a student is back.
Projects: We have many projects in this class. For most projects, students will be in assigned groups, making attendance very important.
Tests: Students will have a notes packet for each test. On most tests, students will be able to use a note card they may make based on the information on the notes packet. I will let students know ahead of time if that is the case. If a student is absent on test day, he or she must make up the test with me. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a time to take the test. If a student is absent the day before the test and returns on test day, he or she must take it the regularly scheduled test day. Students may re-take tests that they fail if they request to do so. Students may be given alternate versions for the re-takes. The highest grade they may earn on a re-take is 70 (C-).
Extra Credit: Very few extra credit activities will be given.
Make Up and Late Work:
- The student is responsible for getting the work from the teacher and completing the work. The assignments are listed on the back board, are listed on canvas, and admits are required after absences. The student will have two days (as stated in that handbook) to hand in the make up work without penalty. Only major assignments will be accepted late. The highest grade late work may receive is a C-. This is the rule for assignments given the day the student is absent, not things that were assigned in advance. Those assigned in advance are due the day a student returns to class.
- Only major assignments will be accepted late.
Plagiarism/ Cheating: Any student caught cheating or copying anyone else’s material will receive a zero for that assignment or test.
Cell Phone Use: Cell phone use will not be allowed in the classroom. Phones being used during class will be taken away and sent to the office. Parents, please do not text your child during school hours.
