COURSE NAME: Administration of Justice 750:  “Ethics and the Criminal Justice System”

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course explores many ethical dilemmas facing criminal justice professionals by first understanding how various "ethical systems" effect the decision making process of police, courts and corrections personnel and then applying your understanding to selected scenarios.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Identify the major concepts of "ethics" and discuss the application of each to an ethical decision-making model within the criminal justice system.
  • Describe the role of the defense attorney, prosecutor, judge, police, corrections, and legislature in the criminal justice system and the ethical issues faced by each.
  • Discuss the contemporary ethical implications of crime control policies as it relates to law enforcement.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN THIS COURSE

To succeed in this course, with a passing grade, you must at minimum:

  • Attend regularly by logging into class each week. Attendance is tracked by ETUDES. Regular weekly updates are sent to the instructor when you are not attending regularly. YOU CAN'T HIDE JUST BECAUSE THIS IS AN ON LINE COURSE! College attendance rules, as described in the College Catalog, apply and you can be dropped for excessive absences.
  • Complete weekly assignments on time.
  • Participate fully in class discussions.
  • Complete Term Paper and Test-4 Essay Question.

 

NOTE: Be prepared to spend between six (6) and nine (9) hours a week with reading and writing assignments. 

HOW WILL YOU BE GRADED? Your final grade is point based on total points earned at the end of the semesterYou earn points for:

  • Quizzes and tests
  • Participation in class discussions
  • Written assignments
  • Term Paper  
  • Essay Question on final (Test 4) 

IMPORTANT: if you do not complete and turn in a Term Paper or answer completely the SLO Question on the final exam your final grade will be dropped one letter grade no matter how points you earn for other assignments during the semester. In other words, these two written assignments are required to pass the course, NO EXCPETIONS. 

Points will be converted to a letter grade as follows:

 

90% of total points

A

80% to 89 %

B

70% to 79%

C

60% to 69%

D

59% and under

F

 

NOTE: Two other things to remember about grading policy:

  1. Absolutely NOEXTRA-CREDIT assignments, so don't ask.
  2. "Incomplete" grades will NOT be given for ANY reason, so don't ask.

DROPS AND WITHDRAWALS: You are responsibility to know College's drop or withdrawal policies and to adhere to all required procedures to drop or withdraw from class (see current Catalog).

RESEARCH PAPER: A 500 word term paper is a requirement. Details will be posted in the course.

SLO QUESTION: A 500 word response is a requirement. Details will be posted in the course.

PLAGIARISM: College plagiarism code of conduct applies to all aspects of this course. The instructor at has sole discretion and may drop you from the course for “plagiarism”.
