Course Title: Africa’s Physical and Human Geography

Course grade level: 7th grade Social Studies

Learning Objectives:

            The goal of the seventh grade social studies curriculum is to is to acquaint middle school students with the world in which they live. The geography domain includes both physical and human geography. The intent of the geography domain is for students to begin to grasp the importance geography plays in their everyday lives.

Module 1 Standards and Objectives

SS7G1 The student will locate selected features of Africa.

  1. Locate on a world and regional political-physical map: the Sahara, Sahel, savanna, tropical rain forest, Congo River, Niger River, Nile River, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Victoria, Atlas Mountains, and Kalahari Desert.
  2. Locate on a world and regional political-physical map the countries of Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire), Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, and South Sudan

 

Module 2 Standards and Objectives

SS7G2 The student will discuss environmental issues across the continent of Africa.

  1. Explain how water pollution and the unequal distribution of water impacts irrigation, trade, industry, and drinking water
  2. Explain the relationship between poor soil and deforestation in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  3. Explain the impact of desertification on the environment of Africa from the Sahel to the rainforest

 

Module 3 Standards and Objectives

SS7G3 The student will explain the impact of location, climate, and physical characteristics on population distribution in Africa.

  1. Explain how the characteristics in the Sahara, Sahel, savanna, and tropical rain forest affect where people live, the type of work they do, and how they travel

 

Structure of Course

The course will be divided into 4 Weeks and 3 Modules along with its related resources, activities, and assignments.  Students will move through module content in the listed order.  All assignments must be submitted/posted NO LATER than 11:59 PM on the due date.  All assignments will fall under the category initial activity of final activity.  Initial Activities must be submitted by Wednesday of the week of that Module.  Final activities must be submitted by the Sunday of that week. Each assignment is numbered the first number lets the student know what module the assignment belongs to, and the second number indicates the order in which the student should complete the assignment and allows the student to easily keep track of each assignment.  Each assignment will have an assigned rubric. 

 

Interactivity and Collaboration:

            Students will interact in their groups, discussion posts and responses to classmates’ postings.  Students will be able to view their classmates’ postings in the discussion section and padlet.

 

Use of Technology:

            Students will use multiple forms of Web 2.0 technology tools (Bubbl.us for online graphic organization mind maps, Google docs, story boards, Padlet, web-based games/tutorials, quizalize) to complete their assignments/module content.  Narrated power points and online video clips will also be used to present content.
