    This chapter, as well as the entire textbook, refreshes the students' understanding of basic networking concepts and provides an overview of the actual threats posed to a network. It also gives a high-level overview of the entire book, introduces topics, and refers to other chapters with more detailed information on specific topics. This chapter introduces students to some important security-related terms used by networking professionals and hackers, and lists resources of information on network security. The major sections in this chapter are 1. The Basics of a Network. Recaps the basics of network structure and data transmission, and relates these concepts to security 2. Assessing Likely Threats to the Network. Describes the three most common threats to networks: malware, intrusions, and denial of service attacks 3. Understanding Security Terminology. Presents common security-related terms used by network security experts and hackers 4. Approaching Network Security. Covers the three common approaches used in securing networks: a perimeter approach, a layered approach, and a hybrid approach 5. Network Security and the Law. Introduces some of the laws that govern how organizational data and networks must be protected
