Purpose

This module will expose you to the responsibility that you carry to engage 21st century learners and make the connect between how learners learn in the classroom and how they operate in their world beyond the classroom, especially considering the skills that will make them competitive in a global economy. You will develop an understanding of what you are expected to do differently in order to engage 21st century students, and what kinds of skills will help students become successful learners in the long term. Whilst the theme is 21st century learning, the means to achieving this will be presented as a connected classroom. By this we mean an Internet connected classroom with access to Web 2.0 tools that could enhance learning, communication and collaboration (interrelated processes) in and beyond the conventional classroom boundaries.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Identify the key elements of 21st century education;
  2. Recognise the challenge you face as a 21st century teacher;
  3. Formulate class project ideas taking into account the dimensions of 21st century learning;
  4. Use Web 2.0 tools to support communication and collaboration;
  5. Use social media in the classroom;
  6. Adapt learning spaces to new teaching and learning paradigms.
