Pick a course to work on for this class. Even if you are not currently teaching, invent a course in your discipline and keep it in mind as you read and work.

High-quality courses are based on the literature of effective pedagogy.

Those who study teaching effectiveness often list these seven factors as the seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education (Chickering and Gamson, 1987):

Encourage faculty-to-student interaction	Respond to student work in a visible manner every week, model appropriate communication in your discipline
Encourage reciprocity and cooperation among students	Encourage students to help each other learn, and create a grading format that reduces competition
Promote active learning	Have students practice using the concepts and skills you are teaching about
Communicate high expectations	Create a course that requires student focus and rewards appropriate effort
Facilitate time on task	Give consistent and frequent deadlines, and break large projects into manageable pieces with regular feedback
Provide prompt feedback	Respond to student questions within 24h, and return assignments quickly
Respect diverse ways of learning	Vary your presentation of materials, make sure presented examples include different types of ethnic, cultural and gender identities

These principles apply to any discipline. And as you can see, they are clearly important in face-to-face courses as well as online ones. Take a few minutes to read through each of these carefully. Which seem easy? Which seem hard? Which surprise you?

Instructor aside:

One of the things I find most valuable about online courses is that it makes me think deeply about things other than the course content. How can I make my course good, in addition to covering the content I need to cover? The ideas I come up with for my online course are often ones I can use to also improve my face-to-face course.
