Applied English
Course Description: Resource English strives to meet the reading and writing goals on a student’s Individual Education Plan, as well as DESK standards. I will use novels and writing prompts to enhance your student’s educational experience. For this class we will be reading books and watching movies/movie clips associated with our readings. Seniors will be reading and watching “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak (Movie: PG-13). With your signature below, I will assume you approve of your student participating in these activities. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.
Expectations:
- Be in your seat when the bell rings and remain there until permission is granted to leave your seat. Come to class prepared.
- Follow directions the first time given.
- Be respectful of others.
- Cell phones must be turned off and out of sight during class. If parents need to contact students during class, they can contact the office. The first time this happens in class, the phone, ipod, etc. will be taken away and can be picked up after class. The second time, it will be turned into the office and a third time, will result in a U for citizenship.
Citizenship: Citizenship grades are based upon the entire term and not a single incident. If cheating occurs then the student will receive an automatic “U”. I will follow the school and district citizenship policy concerning tardies, truancies and absences.
Academic Grades: Students will earn grades according to performance, effort, and individual ability pertaining to class assignments, tests, class discussions, attendance, and being prepared for class. Grades will be affected by classroom behavior through daily participation points that can be subjective.
Grading Scale:
A = 94-100% B+=85-89% C=75-79% D = 65-69% F = 0-59%
A- = 90-93% B=80-84% C- = 70-74% D- = 60-64%
Make-up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to collect and turn in missing/late work. Late work will be accepted for a week after the due date, after that date, late work will NOT be accepted. Students will have a week to make up work missed from an excused absence. Students will receive three “Willette Passes” a quarter. These passes can be used for missing/late assignments, as a hall pass, or as a bathroom pass. (Passes cannot be used for tests or quizzes.)
I reserve the right to make changes or additions to these policies, and will inform you in advance.
